Evaluation of the reality of applying the business continuity management system according to the international standard ISO 22301 in Egyptian hotels

Abstract

The existence of a business continuity management system in the hotel industry today has become one of the essential elements in the crisis management system, to regain the hotel full capacity and return to normal life. It achieves a safe environment and reduces the potential impacts that negatively affect the work. The current study aims to assess the reality of the application of the business continuity management system in accordance with the international standard ISO 22301 in Egyptian hotels. To achieve this goal, the researchers designed the checklist based on the international standard ISO 22301 for the year 2019 in line with the nature of hotels’ work to measure the gap and know the level of its application. The study included 92 requirements covering the seven basic items mentioned in the specification, and a seven-point scale system was used to be more appropriate to the subject of the study. A heptagonal scale system was used to be more suitable for the study. The results of the study indicated that there are shortcomings in the application of most of the provisions and requirements of the international standard in hotels, the results of the study indicated that there are shortcomings in the application of most of the provisions and requirements of the international standard in the hotels' study sample. The study recommended implementing the business continuity management system (ISO 22301) by providing the necessary financial resources for the application to enable hotels to determine the necessary ways to ensure business continuity, minimize crises, reduce work stoppages, and receive guests through a preventive system way to recover, thus achieves a high competitive advantage.
