al-Zammām and al-Zammāmia at the Age of the Mamluk Sultans (648-923 H./ 1250-1517 A.D.)

Abstract

This research studies the job of “al-Zammām” or “Zammām al-Aādir al-Šarīfa”, which is considered one of the most important jobs during the Mamluk era. The significance of this job comes from its function which was related to the supervision of all affairs of the Sultan's Harem. So, the Amir who was occupying this job enjoyed great confidence from the Sultan and had a high-ranking position in the royal palace. Therefore, the main aim of this research is represented in shedding light on this job, as well as its history and various tasks. Finally, this research presents some notable results, the most important of which is making a list of the Amirs who occupied this job during the successive ages of the Mamluk Sultans, as well as highlighting their lives, characteristics, architectural buildings, and inscriptions.
