Abstract:This article sheds light on the vital role of the Papyrus Museum and Papyrus Collection at the Austrian National Library in spreading the knowledge of the Egyptian history and civilization, and promoting tourism to Egypt in Austrian and Europe. The collection is classified as the greatest of its kind in the world. It was registered on the UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2001. The Papyrus Museum displays a wide variety of objects and writing materials (e.g., papyri, paper, parchment, and ostraka) that retell the past stories and history of Egypt throughout the centuries, allowing the visitors to explore the beauty and grandeur of the Egyptian civilization across the ages. The article also reports the outcomes of the ongoing research project “Papyri of the Early Arab Period Online,” funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation since March 14, 2013.
