Abstract

This paper focuses on studying the depiction of the cross in Coptic manuscripts, its places and uses, including the crosses that fill the initial folio of the manuscript or between its chapters, and the small marginal crosses. The study explains illuminations or decorations accompanied the cross and its symbolism, such as floral (Iris, Bramble and Palm fonds), Birds (peacocks, pigeons and geese),  geometric motifs (triangle, circle, square and hexagonal shapes), and accompanying texts or abbreviations. The research applied to a collection of Pasxa and Psalmodia manuscripts in the Ottoman era as an example.
