Geometric Decoration in Coptic Manuscripts through the Collection of Psalmodia and Paskha Manuscripts during Ottoman Period

Abstract

The paper displays the geometric motifs drawn by the Coptic artist in Coptic manuscripts. There are many forms, some are used as decorations in the initial folio, and others have drawn at the end of subjects, and each of them has its own style. The artist or copyist sometimes decorated page with specific number interlaced circles that have a meaning and a symbol, some of which influenced by ancient Egyptian, Greco-Roman or Islamic art. The geometric decorations include (circle, square, hexagons, star patterns, braid, and chapter headpieces). The research applied to a collection of Pasxa and Psalmodia manuscripts in the Ottoman era as an example.
