Abstract

This article aims to study the origin of al-Taʿrīf (i.e., to hold the ʿArafāt ceremony [outside Mecca] in the Grand Mosque after ʿAsr prayer) in the mosque of ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ during the reign of the governor ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān (in office 65-86/685-705) in an attempt to understand the essence of this phenomenon and the reasons for its emergence, considering the impact of the armed struggle between the Umayyads and Zubayrids during the period of the second fitna that lasted for 10 years (63-73/682-692), and ended with the murder of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr in 73/692. The main goal of this article is, therefore, to address the following research question: Was the inauguration of the Taʿrīf in the Grand Mosque of ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ during the reign of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān an imitation of the Taʿrīf that took place in the Grand Mosques of Kūfa and Baṣra or was there a political dimension beyond this practice?
