Abstract

The research illustrates the political role of Elias Andraos, as one of the most prominent of King Farouk’s entourage and his Economic Advisor, in the formation and resignation of the Ministry III of Ali Maher. Andraos had played the role of mediator between the King and his government. He was also an intermediary between Abdeen Palace and Qasr El-Doubara, between the Egyptian Government and the British Embassy. Andraos participated in formation of Maher's Ministry III, he spoke, on behalf of the King with the Prime Minister, choosing certain ministers and excluding others; this shows his great influence with the King at this stage. He took part in the events occurred later on. Andraos was at first upholder of Maher, but he and his King began to turn against his Ministry because of Maher's flirtation with the Wafd. Then Andraos and Afifi concurred with the King to overthrow Maher’s Ministry. The British Ambassador and Egyptian Ministers of interior and finance contributed to this conspiracy, each according to his role. The way in which, Maher’s Ministry, which lasted for a month and a few days, was overthrown, should only indicate the extent of deterioration of Farouk and his advisors led by Andraos and Afifi; both men conspired with the Ambassador of a Foreign country to overthrow an Egyptian Ministry.
