Abstract

The characters of Adam appeared in Old Testament and liturgical texts. It is noteworthy to find that his illustrations in Coptic art included some developments that may not have been remarkable, but the scarcity of their portrayal in comparison to the stereotypical themes such as the depictions of Jesus and the Virgin Mary is interesting.
Through the study of wall paintings (tombs, churches, and monasteries), icons, and manuscripts, this article will try to follow the development in the embodiment of Adam in Coptic art and the subsequent various effects of Syrian, Byzantine, and Greek. It will also trace the continuity of these influences in Egyptian churches in the modern and contemporary periods.
The research will deal as well with the diverse ways of depiction of Adam, who is often represented during the event of falling in sin or in the act of resurrection and descent to hell.
Finally, the present paper will deal with the different representations of Adam on diverse materials like wall paintings, manuscripts, and wooden icons, throughout the history of Coptic iconography.
