Exploring Tourist Social Responsibility: A Case Study of Sustainable Practices in Sharm El-Sheikh as a Green City

Abstract

Tourist Social Responsibility (TSR) refers to the ethical behavior and conscious actions of travelers that contribute positively to the environment, local communities, and cultural heritage of the destinations they visit.
Responsible tourists respect local customs, support local economies, minimize environmental impact, and aim to preserve natural and cultural resources for future generations. TSR encourages sustainable tourism practices, helping destinations maintain their ecological balance and social integrity while offering enriching experiences to visitors.
Sharm El-Sheikh is a leading tourist destination in Egypt that has been recognized for its efforts toward sustainability and eco-friendly tourism. As a "Green City," it promotes environmental conservation, sustainable tourism practices, and social responsibility among tourists. This research explores the concept of Tourist Social Responsibility (TSR) in Sharm El-Sheikh, examining how visitors can contribute to the city’s sustainability goals. The study highlights key initiatives, challenges such an environmental, cultural and recommendations for enhancing tourist engagement in environmental and social preservation.
The study aims to assess current tourist awareness of Sharm El-Sheikh’s green initiatives and evaluate the effectiveness of existing TSR (Tourist Social Responsibility) programs. The methodology of the research depends on the questionnaires developed and directed to a sample of tourists in Sharm Elsheikh, total number of questionnaires distributed was 250, 186 questionnaires were valid for the analysis. The main results were: By adopting TSR practices, visitors can help preserve the city’s natural beauty and support sustainable tourism. Future success requires collaboration between authorities, businesses, and tourists to ensure long-term environmental and social benefits.
