The Role of the Italian “Pini” Family in Egypt during the 18th and 19th Centuries A Historical and Heritage Study on the Development of Heritage Tourism in Alexandria

Abstract

The Italian Pini family settled in Egypt in the mid-18th century and, over the course of four generations, contributed significantly to key aspects of Egypt’s modern history. Members of the family held various positions, some of which had a marked influence on the country’s development up until the early 20th century. Despite the notable role played by the men of this family, historical studies have addressed them only briefly, often limiting their mention to a few individuals. This study is therefore the first to focus primarily on the role of the Pini family in Egypt, whether in the political, commercial, or architectural fields. It also traces the remaining legacy of the Pini family in the city of Alexandria and examines how this heritage can be utilized to enhance heritage tourism, particularly in Alexandria. Furthermore, the study contributes to the revitalization of Alexandria’s cultural tourism product in general and provides tour planners with new tourist destinations within the city to diversify tour programs. It also supports the knowledge base of tour guides—especially Italian-speaking guides and walking tour guides in Alexandria.
